Join Us in Stopping the White Stallion Energy Center

Because you care about clean air, I’m writing to you today asking for your help in getting a federal agency’s attention on a matter that could impact us all.

Here’s the situation: The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has “go” or “no-go” decision making power on approval of the White Stallion coal plant, a project that could greatly impact air quality for all Houston area residents and future generations. In particular, the agency has the power – and we believe an ethical obligation – to request that an Environmental Impact Study be conducted ensuring full disclosure of what we’re truly facing should the plant receive the necessary permits. [Read more in our editorial published in the Houston Chronicle.]

Here’s the ask: Would you please take 10 minutes to write a letter to the Corps, simply asking that the agency call for an Environmental Impact Study on White Stallion? Below are points you could include in your personalized letter, rather than relying on a form letter that could have less impact:

  • White Stallion pollution could dramatically increase Houston area smog levels, which already exceed national standards.
  • This plant may not be in our backyards, but it’s awfully close – just 20 miles outside our smog non-attainment area. That’s close enough to undo years of efforts and hundreds of millions of dollars we have invested trying to clean up Houston air.
  • We don’t have all of the facts. Unless an Environmental Impact Statement is done, we will never know the real impacts to our environment until after the pollution has already been emitted.
  • We are concerned about air pollution, especially when we learn that projected emissions from the White Stallion plant will include 10 million tons of carbon dioxide, nearly 5,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, more than 4,000 tons of nitrogen oxide, nearly 1,800 tons of particulate matter and nearly 100 pounds of mercury.
  • The Corps should prove to the public that its permitting process is fair and transparent.

Several agencies have officially recommended an EIS: Environmental Protection Agency, Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, and Bay City Port Authority of Matagorda County.
